Originally from South Africa, Beth has lived and worked as a New Zealand citizen for over 40 years as a registered nurse in a number different health fields. She finally exchanged the demands of nursing to study to be an artist and completed a Batchelor of Fine Arts degree at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design in 2002. She then went on to gain her Master of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts, at the University of Auckland in 2005. Beth is an active member of Pulseart and has exhibited privately and as part of the Group.
I am inspired by memories, inner emotions, history, and a fascination with the human psyche; my paintings are visual narratives, drawing on allegorical and surreal imagery to illustrate the parallels between human experience and the mysteries of the inner world. I work intuitively, and never really know entirely what I’m doing until it’s done. I am attracted to old objects and clothing, and I like to marry different eras for a timeless feel. In juxtaposing the human form with nature and varying real or imagined landscapes, I offer glimpses into these other places we all mentally possess, because when viewers can’t quite put my paintings into any one time frame, they must attach their own moments.
